Our Museum
In April 1918, the German advance on Amiens, a vital communication center for the Allies during the First World War, was stopped by the mainly Australian actions at Villers-Bretonneux.
The war over, a small contingent of the Australian War Graves Office is based in Villers-Bretonneux.
The flourishing city is in ruins, and to rebuild it, Australians and French help each other in a movement of international solidarity which is reflected in the reconstruction of his school. From then on, the bonds uniting the Bretonvillois to the people of Australia continue to develop until today.
The museum presents this unpublished story of war, memory and future through the richness of the collection of the Franco-Australian association made mainly of donations.
The museum tour allows us to understand the construction of this Franco-Australian memory, by means of 4 sequences (memory of the place, place of memory - memories of war - memory of the men - memories of a city) illustrated by personal objects of soldiers (uniforms, letters, photographs) but also by moving testimonies of this Franco-Australian friendship.

Our territory
Like many villages in Picardy, life in Villers-Bretonneux is punctuated by the perpetual wars and the "catastrophes" that affect this province.

In 1636, Villers-Bretonneux was caught in the Spanish torment while the Imperials besieged his neighbouring town: Corbie.
On November 27, 1870, violent fighting marked the beginning of a Prussian occupation of 3 months.

Finally, on April 25, 1918, after a period of fierce fighting during which Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the famous Red Baron with 80 air victories, was shot down nearby on April 21, 1918; the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) stops the advance of the German troops towards AMIENS.

As early as 1920, Melbourne "adopts" Villers-Bretonneux and since 1984,
Villers-Bretonneux is twinned with the small town of Robinvale in Australia (state of Victoria).

ANZAC  Day
April 25 Anzac Day, is one of the most important Australian national holidays. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealander forces during the First World War.more
